A young, unarmed black teenager, Jamir Woodson, is killed by a white officer on his way home from school. Lt. Powell, who supervises the white officer, is a young black man who quickly worked his way up the ranks and could be the next police chief. However, his denial about racism in the police department after Jamir is killed is causing turmoil in the town and at home with his wife. Being that Lt. Powell’s wife, Mrs. Perez-Powell, has her own deep dark secrets about racism and colorism, their marriage takes a turn for the worse.
Meanwhile, Jamir’s older sister Aajah, who had custody of him, is constantly fighting with her closest cousin, Assata. Assata is frustrated about how passive and forgiving Aajah is about the situation, which eventually changes their relationship forever. As time goes on, Aajah and Lt. Powell speak to one another. They realize the only way the issues they both face will be resolved is by understanding that their differences aren’t really that different.
